Teaching Self-Defense for Kids
How important is self-defense for kids?
What is the age-appropriate when introducing the art of self-defense?
Early this year, our child entered formal schooling and and it requires the children to choose 1 (one) elective subject which they referred as “club” to be held once a week after school program. Some six-year old male children select Taekwondo, one of the self-defense program being taught at an early age. As parents, we entertain the idea of enrolling our daughter to a Taekwondo class to protect her from harmful elements brought by chaotic society. Knowing self-defense makes children aware of the risk when they encountered bad characters or scenario. I gauge it as a way to adopt the discipline, having a precautionary measures during bad situations, and how to deal with bullies and aggregators when the condition arises.
After all, I’ve seen signs our child will hone interest at it, having broken our round dining table’s glass top with her right elbow. Without harming her parts and not even the slightest cry of pain. As far as she is concerned, it’s still too early for her age. Anyway she love dancing and other movements for now, we wanted her to enjoy her time and learn more things. The age-appropriate for her (based from our observation) is around 8 years old and above, to reached certain body maturity. Some female kids started early, some late, it really depends on the child’s readiness. Don’t push the child just because of parents’ wants. The child’s health conditions, strong points and weaknesses needs to be properly assessed by parents themselves.
Other suggested self-defense tools for parents are taser gun, pepper spray or even a simple cutter.
